Mid point self Evaluation.

At this stage in the year I feel that reflecting on my approach to the module is critical, I know that I have worked on many briefs, however the inefficiency and seemingly hap hazard way of working in Level 05 could creep into my practice if I do not review how I am doing.

Evaluation

ABScreenPrint

This project turned from a couple of fan posters into a larger project which will eventually span the entire of Level 06, resulting in 26 screen printed posters. At this stage I would prefer, and should be further ahead with screen printing the posters, I aimed to produce 1 a week, however after crits with peers and my own personal reflection, some of the artwork was not to the quality I would be pleased with in the end of year show.

Screen printing within this project has given me the vision for the final year show, even at this early stage in the year, when I set out to complete the 26 posters, I knew that I wanted something tactile and artistic. Ultimately they show my synergy with hand rendering artwork for print and acts as a way of expressing my visions in a confident way.

I am behind by around 6 posters at this stage but know that I will catch up by the start of January, there were unforeseen double bookings and large amounts of drop in slots booked up which prevented me from printing 4 posters for the interim submission of which I have the separations for.. This leaves me with the knowledge that I must create 2 posters from concept to print in this time also.

This project is one that I am most happy with and looking forward to completing due to the great feedbck and welcoming I have received in the public eye. I have had one of the posters hung in an exhibition and band members for The Boxer Rebellion have asked for the poster to be given to them for their studio.

Chris Stone Logo

This brief went particularly well throughout the development process as the client was set on the idea of a fluid logo from the moment I pitched it to him. Once the initial hurdle of discovering what film producers do on a daily basis it became a concept driven piece of work. Having spoken to Chris about what he does on set for the production of movies, it was easy to pinpoint how to show his maturity, this came from the iconic Saul Bass posters and classic Hitchcock portrait references.
The client was very happy with the result and has sent me the following message regarding the success of the work.
Working on this brief made me realise how research of aesthetics can prove most effective when you don't search too deep, finding the cut off point and going with what felt right proved to be successful.

A Very Alternative Christmas

Because I was given a song to illustrate through type, I had the complication of fitting the song onto an A6 printed space. I wanted to remind people of the catchy Christmas song without the hidden meaning or rough band aesthetics. It was my aim to have the song stuck in peoples head by using the main section of the chorus without completing it in print, hopefully people would read it and finish off the chorus in their heads.
Although around 3 days were originally given for this brief to be completed, due to my schedule of working 3 days that particular week I turned the brief around in a day. This meant researching very rapidly and sketching 3 drafts, picking the strongest based on a mini crit with peers and then running with it.
The end result is something I can be pleased with, the card has sold well and I believe that I resolved the issue of embedding the song in the readers head.

Ceoliac Type Specimen

This brief ran over from a 3 week to an ongoing piece of work, I personally massively underestimated the time it takes to digitally render a typeface. This project was to aid Natalie with her self set ceoliac booklet brief which is due to start in March 2014, initially we would work together to create 1 digital type specimen and I would put it into Fontographer. The first 10 days went according to our schedule and the final versions of each letter were beginning to be put into Illustrator. Once I was into illustrator the brief essentially became mine for the next week, however it became something that I realised would take me at least 2 weeks, given the other projects I was working on and 2 live briefs that popped up.
Once the typeface had two versions and enough glyphs to make a specimen book Natalie was brought back into the production line and helped with the layout, which I struggled with. My research into specimen booklets made me realise that they can be quite dry, this typeface is aimed to engage younger people and therefore we set about putting extras into the booklet and creating a pack.
At this stage, it is clear that another 10 days are needed to amend all of the print issues and create the final pack.
I am regretful in how much I underestimated the timescale needed but confident that with another week or so of work I can have a final piece to pleased with rather than just a book with some type on each page.

DR.ME flag

This workshop came at a time where I was finding my feet in several hand crafting briefs. This was a great opportunity to stop everything for day and just work in a collaborative project on a large scale.
The flag came out fantastic and adds a talking point to my portfolio. They guys at DR.ME highlighted a way of being a creative professional by working in any way they want and being successful for that.

Elmwood “Brand the boring”

Elmwood was developed over a 3 week period and became a focus for me in the lead up to the Christmas break, I felt that with the caliber of the studio and the prize of a placement at stake, I felt I should put all my efforts into this one.
It was difficult for me in terms of visuals, the start of level 06 has been purely hand rendering, craft and screen print so having to use digital mock ups was a tough experience. I think that my use of Photoshop in this brief has refreshed my appetite for a high end aesthetic. I worked with Thomas Squire in crits to help push this as I feel he has a very successful way of showing an idea through presentation boards. His advice helped me understand how to set out presentation boards with backgrounds.
Approaching the first crit with Steph, I was confident that I could present my idea with words and visuals, however once this was over I realised that having some supportive information on each board would be necessary  As the submission is digital it is essential that I communicate what each idea is and how it makes up an overall identity system for the car park.
Steph pointed out some ideas that could be developed and one that should be dropped, from this point onwards I feel that my decision making skills improved dramatically. Because the rendering was taking me so long, it was essential that I ran with ideas and made them work.
I feel that I have been successful in terms of creating an identity or a system of branding something boring, the concept is driven by immersing the guest in a colourful world and supported by gaming language.

New statement of intent
